Dental Shades Avenue is an advanced mobile application developed by AVADA MEDIA team to solve one of the most challenging tasks in dentistry: accurate determination of tooth color and selection of appropriate materials for prosthetics and whitening. The project is based on research work and the client company’s patented solution (Dental Shades Avenue:PCT/US2022/073664 ), which allows efficient analysis of tooth color parameters using a cell phone camera and a special set of reference shades (color masters).

Before automated solutions, dentists relied primarily on visual assessment of tooth color, which was first proposed by Vita in 1924. The essence of the traditional method is to compare the patient’s tooth with a set of standardized samples – the so-called shade guide. However, this approach has a number of significant drawbacks:

1. Subjectivity: the result largely depends on the doctor’s experience and visual perception.
2. Influence of lighting: the level of lighting in the office directly affects the accuracy of color selection.
3. Complexity of document flow: manual transfer of data to the laboratory increases the risk of errors and delays the deadlines.

There are also alternative methods of colorimetry – digital cameras, colorimeters and spectrophotometers. They exclude the subjective factor, but often require significant financial investments, are difficult to use and do not always provide absolute accuracy or save time.

Innovative solution from AVADA MEDIA

Dental Shades Avenue offers a completely different approach to color matching, combining the simplicity of a mobile application and the reliability of colorimetric analysis:

• Hardware and software complex: it is based on the use of any modern smartphone (Android, and in the future iOS) and a special calibration sample – a color master.
• High accuracy: using a patented algorithm, machine learning and neural networks, the application determines the color of teeth with maximum accuracy, taking into account adjustments for lighting and individual shooting characteristics.
• Availability: compared to expensive specialized devices, Dental Shades Avenue requires minimal costs – a smartphone and a set of color masters of a symbolic price are enough.
• Universality: the application works with any sets of shades and materials from various manufacturers, and also supports the creation and calibration of your own shade libraries.

The AVADA MEDIA team developed a technologically complex mobile application over 12 months, combining the latest research in the field of colorimetry and the improvement of mathematical methods of analysis. To achieve high accuracy and speed of work, we integrated neural networks and modern image recognition algorithms, which ensures self-training of the program based on collected statistics and continuous improvement of results.

How app works

Authorization and preparation

• Doctor downloads Dental Shades Avenue and logs into the application using his phone number.
• Selects a suitable shade guide or creates his own set of samples.

Calibration

• With help of color master, application registers the exact characteristics of the reference colors and calculates the correction factors associated with shooting.
• This allows you to subsequently determine shades of the teeth as accurately as possible.

Shooting the patient’s teeth

• Patient clamps color master between the teeth, and the doctor takes a photo.
• Built-in neural network automatically recognizes the study areas. If necessary, doctor can manually adjust these areas for a more accurate result.

Analysis and report

• Application performs mathematical processing of image using a pre-calibrated library of shades.
• As a result, system produces the most suitable color from selected shade guide, which dentist passes on to dental technician for making a prosthesis or whitening.

• Efficiency: the app allows you to accurately identify the right shade, reducing the risk of errors and returns.
• Automation: critical processes, from analysis to data transfer, are done in one or two clicks.
• Scalability: Dental Shades Avenue will evolve and improve with more data to train neural networks and expand functionality.
